How Does Double Glazing Work?

At T&K Home Improvements, we supply and install a bespoke range of double glazing products for homeowners in Rushden, Banbury, Irthlingborough, and throughout Northamptonshire.

You might be wondering what double glazing is and how it works, so this article will give you a few helpful tips. Read on to learn more.

What Is Double Glazing?

The double glazing manufacturing process is simple and straightforward. Two panes of glass are separated by argon gas to create a robust thermal barrier. This traps natural heat in your home and keeps cold air outside, which could help reduce your energy bills.

The spacer bars are made with a low thermal conduction rate that helps reduce heat loss. The first pane of glass is filled with the spacer bar in position, creating an argon filled chamber, while the second pane helps trap the argon gas, creating a vacuum. Then, once the frame is filled with argon gas, it is sealed around the edges so heat is retained, keeping its structural integrity

How Does Double Glazing Reduce Heat Loss?

Double glazing helps reduce heat loss through a thermal cushion and gas insulation in a sealed unit. Once cold air hits the glass pane, it is transferred to the gas layer unit which prevents it from entering your home. Equally, when warm air hits the glass pane, the argon gas will help reduce the transmission from inside the room. A naturally warmer space could help save on energy bills as a result.

What’s more, additional features can be added to your double glazing product. This includes self cleaning glass, low emissivity (Low-E) glass, and reflective e-coating. Self-cleaning glass uses a special coating that breaks down dirt and grime when exposed to sunlight, making it easier to maintain a clean and clear window. Low E glass contains an invisible oxide coating next to the gap. This lets in warm air and sunlight but prevents it from escaping, improving the thermal efficiency levels. Reflective e-coating helps to control solar gain by reflecting shortwave radiation away from the glass. This helps stop the room from overheating in the summer.

How Soundproof Is Double Glazing?

You can feel confident that double glazing offers better noise reduction, as the panes of glass could help cut sound vibrations out.

At T&K Home Improvements, we offer acoustic glazing that is perfect for reducing noise in your home. It comes with two layers of thick and lightweight glass that is laminated with Polyvinyl Butyral, which can help significantly reduce outside noise in your home.

How Does Double Glazing Reduce Condensation?

Condensation is formed when moisture laden air combines with a cold exterior like a windowpane, creating water droplets.

To address the situation, the sealed unit is built with crystalline desiccant in the spacer. This draws the moisture out of the air gap, helping keep the panes dry. The air gap keeps the panes closer to room temperature, which is enough to stop water vapour from forming in the glass.
