Boost Your Home’s Kerb Appeal

If you’ve ever spent any time watching home improvement shows like Grand Designs or Homes Under The Hammer, you’ve likely heard the phrase ‘kerb appeal.’ It gets bandied about a lot and not just on TV either. Kerb appeal is a regularly mentioned in magazines and by estate agents, builders and just about everyone whose business revolves around properties.

But, what exactly is it? Here at T&K, we’re just as guilty as anyone of overusing the phrase, so we thought we’d take a moment to explain. At its base level, kerb appeal is how nice a house looks. The more attractive a building is, the more likely it is to entice potential buyers. Boosting kerb appeal is a great way to increase the potential selling price, but it’s worth thinking about even if your home isn’t on the market.

Using Home Improvement To Drive Up Property Value

Making your house look nice does wonders for your mental health. Coming home after a stressful day of work to a tidy, stylish living space can make you relax easily and forget your troubles. So even if you aren’t planning to sell your property anytime soon, it’s also worth thinking about how to improve it.

Giving it a makeover with the latest doors and windows is a good place to start. For example, removing an old, weather-beaten front door with a more modern one. The front door is almost always the first thing visitors and passers-by notice, so why not use it to make a positive impression? For instance, a composite door or aluminium entrance door can dramatically overhaul the front of a house. They’ll deliver an improved performance too; estate agents know all about topics like noise reduction and thermal efficiency. New doors excel at these and can quickly increase the value.

You could also consider improving the windows. We’ve been involved in plenty of projects over the years where cracked, drafty old windows were replaced with newer ones and it made an immediate difference. It’s easy to take our windows for granted and ignore them for years, but trust us, it’s worth the effort. When you find out the value of your home, you’ll be glad you installed new casement or sliding sash windows.

Don’t Forget The Back Of The House

When thinking about kerb appeal, there’s one trap that people commonly fall into; neglecting the back of the house. This is understandable. After all, you rarely see this part when stood on the kerb, but don’t overlook it. Once the estate agent has led potential buyers around the front, they’ll inevitably want to check out the back and garden too.

And imagine how impressed they’ll be if they find a pristine orangery out there? Or maybe some charming French doors that make nature seem closer and add a subtle, European flair. Making improvements to the street-facing part of the house is a great way to make a good impression, but working on the back ensures that it lingers in the memory and make selling it easier.

These are just a few ways to improve the home, but it doesn’t just make the aesthetics better. Replacing old doors, windows and extensions can improve thermal insulation and security, not to mention cut down on external noise. If you’d like to know more, why not get in touch with T&K?
