Getting To Grips With Window Energy Ratings

The cost-of-living crisis is encouraging people to look at ways to reduce their energy bills. There is little point in turning down the thermostat if heat is escaping through your old windows and doors. Adrian Timbers, Sales and Marketing manager at T&K Home Improvements, gives an insight into energy ratings with windows and what customers should consider.

So, What Are Window Energy Ratings?

Window Energy Ratings (WER) are governed by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) and are designed to help consumers make informed choices. The colourful graph, pictured above, is a guide to a window’s level of energy efficiency. When buying windows always make sure that the company has a WER rating which you can search for online and is verified from an independent body.

Window Energy Ratings provide an outline or overall value for how energy-efficient a window is. They take into consideration the thermal efficiency, solar gain and air leakage. Windows are rated using a scale to symbolise the total energy efficiency of the windows, where an ‘A’ is the highest rating iand a ‘G’ is the lowest. Window energy ratings are tested and approved by independent organisations, so you need to be sure that a manufacturer can verify the performance claims of their products.

Is Having High-Performing Windows Worth The Cost?

There is a cost factor when considering the energy rating for new windows. Naturally, the higher the window’s energy rating, the higher the price but this needs to be considered alongside how much money will be saved on energy bills.

Whether they’re worth it is ultimately a personal decision and you have to consider your own circumstances, but our advice is simple. Consider all the options with a professional company that has all the accreditations and certifications – but the general rule is the higher the rating on the window the more thermally efficient it will be, and the higher the savings you will make from rising energy bills. The cost of installing new windows might seem high, but when you consider that they’ll help save money every year, the benefits soon outweigh the initial asking price.
